Let's Create a Healthy Smoothie for Coach Bec's Swim Team!

Important Information for the Teacher

Background Information for Teachers:
This website 'Create a healthy Smoothie' has been designed for a year 4 level using the Australian Curriculum: Technologies. This area of the curriculum contains two subjects, design technologies and digital technologies, which students will be engaging with. This website is a resource which students can work through to develop knowledge and understanding on design and digital technologies.

Design Technologies-

Knowledge and Understanding

Content Descriptor: Investigate food and fibre production and food technologies used in modern and traditional societies (ACTDEK012)

Elaboration: investigating the labels on food products to determine how the information provided contributes to healthy eating, for example ingredients and nutrition panels

(Australian Curriculum, 2015)

Processes and Production Skills

Content Descriptor: Critique needs or opportunities for designing and explore and test a variety of materials, components, tools and equipment and the techniques needed to produce designed solutions (ACTDEP014)

Elaboration: Examine the structure and production of everyday products, services and environments to enhance their own design ideas

(Australian Curriculum, 2015)

The resource for the design technology subject is the website, which contains supporting learning materials: worksheet - consisting of three tasks, videos, websites and games. The design technology subject is spread over the Introduction, Production and Manufacturing and Food Labels pages. Students will develop and share their knowledge and understanding on food production and food labels, create and design a recipe for a healthy smoothie, and food label to match. This allows the students to develop sound nutrition principles and formulate knowledge on food preparation skills and food safety, whilst linking to the key idea 'Thinking in Technology (Design).'

Aligned general capabilities:

- Literacy

- Information Communication Technology

- Critical and Creative Thinking

- Numeracy

Cross-curriculum priorities:

Students will engage with the cross-curriculum priorities targetted by the Australian CUrriculum (2015), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Culture. This will be done by watching a video to understand and research food production and manufacturing in this culture.

Digital Technologies-

Knowledge and Understanding

Content Descriptor: Identify and explore a range of digital systems with peripheral devices for different purposes, and transmit different types of data (ACTDIK007).

Elaboration: using different peripheral devices to display information to others, for example using a mobile device, interactive whiteboard or a data projector to present information.

Processes and Production Skills

Content Descriptor: Plan, create and communicate ideas and information independently and with others, applying agreed ethical and social protocols (ACTDIP013).
Elaboration: managing a project that involves students working together to publish online, for example identifying how group members can help each other to avoid delays in finishing the project.

This resource is an assessment task sheet which links student knowledge from the design technology subject with digital technologies. The resource will enable students to understand how ICT's can be used in today's society for both research and the presentation of data and information to appeal to an audience. The digital technology subject and resource is addressed at the 'Your Task' page.

Aligned general capabilities:
- Literacy

- Information Communication Technology

- Critical and Creative Thinking

Important information for teacher:

Lesson Information

> The design technology subject contains 6 x 45 minute lessons (2 lessons on the 'Introduction' and 'Production and Manufacturing' Page and 4 lessons on the 'Food Labels' page).

> The digital technology subject contains 6 x 45 minute lessons.
> The Digital technology subject is addressed at the Your task Page (6 lessons).

Differentiation

In the Design Technology and Digital Technology subject work can be differentiated for students by:
- Teacher aid assistance for students who are lower level learners.

- Instructions may be read for students who cannot read them.

- Students can be grouped to allow for peer tutoring and assistance.

- In the design technology subject an already structured food label will be provided for lower level students.
